What Broken Beach is, and why it carries two names

Indonesia.Travel describes Broken Beach, or Pasih Uug, as an astonishing cove with a stunning natural archway and a gorgeous turquoise pond, about 3 kilometers to the northwest of Kelingking Beach.1 Kompas adds that foreigners know the place as Broken Beach, while locals call it Pasih Uug, and that a cliff surrounds part of the beach in a circle.2 So the name is a translation of the local one, which is why you will see both on signs and in tour titles.

detikBali gives a clearer picture of what you look at. It describes a natural pool of clear blue-green water inside a half circle of eroded cliffs, where small fish can be seen swimming.3 There is no beach to lie on here. The view is the point: you stand at the rim, look down into the cove and across the arch, and the sea does the rest.

The stop sits on the same stretch of coast as Kelingking Beach, in the south-west of the island. The map above places the pair on the western panel. Three of the listings below visit Kelingking, Angel's Billabong and Pasih Uug within one block of the day.

Angel's Billabong, the pool beside the arch

Kompas, in a 2020 piece on Nusa Penida's beaches, describes Angel's Billabong in Nusa Penida as crystal blue water surrounded by colorful coral reefs.5 That is a description of a rock pool by the sea, and it is the reason the place is photographed so often. Our sources use the pool's name interchangeably with Billabong, as ANTARA does when it reports an incident there.4

Listings put Angel's Billabong and Pasih Uug together, one after the other: the shared east and west day lists Angel's Billabong for 20 minutes and Pasih Uug Beach for 20 minutes, the ferry highlights day lists 25 minutes each, and the private east and west day lists 20 minutes each. The premium yacht day says it will stop by Angel's Billabong if there is enough time, which is a softer promise.

Treat those numbers as an honest warning about pace. In twenty minutes you can walk to the rim, take your photographs, look at the water and be back at the vehicle. If you want to linger at either, say so before the day starts and ask whether the stop can be extended.

The waves at the cliff edge: what the 2024 report says

In October 2024 Basarnas Bali reported that a visitor was on a cliff at Billabong with other tourists, taking in the view and photographing it, when a large wave struck and swept him into the sea.4 It is a hard story, and it is the reason this page has a section on waves. We tell it plainly because the lesson is simple and applies to every visitor.

The facts are simple. The edges here are high rock that waves can reach, and photographs reward standing as close to the lip as you dare. A wave that is unexpected is the one that matters. Stay behind any barrier, keep to the paths and the marked platforms, and treat the waterline of the pool as off limits unless a local guide tells you the sea is calm that day.

A related ANTARA report from Kelingking, in January 2026, tells the same lesson: a big wave knocked a visitor down at the shoreline.9 Along this coast the sea is not a backdrop. If your group includes children, give one adult the job of watching them near the edge. Never ask anyone to step closer for a better angle, and never turn your back to the water while you frame a shot.

Pick by pace

Which stop length suits you?

The arch and pool are quick stops, so the question is how much else the day holds.

  • If I want the longest stops

    The ferry highlights day

It lists 25 minutes at each of the pair, from $26.

  • If I want the best-reviewed day

    The shared east-west day

The listing is rated 4.71 from 7,780 reviews.

  • If I want a group of just us

    The private east-west day

It lists a private group, from $42.

  • If I want snorkeling as well

    The premium yacht day

It lists snorkel stops and Angel's Billabong if time allows.

  • If I am wary of the sea

    Stay behind the barriers

A large wave swept a visitor off a cliff at Billabong.4

The price and the time on the ground

detikBali's December 2025 guide lists entry to Broken Beach at Rp5,000 per person and puts the drive from Kelingking at 30 minutes.3 In its sample day the stop runs from 14:30 to 15:00, last of the sights before the return to Sampalan harbor at 15:00.22 These are the paper's own figures, written in rupiah as stated, and an operator who includes entry may not ask you for any cash.

The island levy applies on top of any single-site fee. In April 2022 the Klungkung regent put it at Rp25,000 per adult and Rp15,000 per child, valid for the whole stay,23,24 and the regency's tourism head said in July 2023 that the ticket covers sites run by the regency without further payment.25 Keep the ticket handy; it is the proof that you have paid it.

On the listings above, each of the two stops takes 20 to 25 minutes of a long day. The shared east and west day starts at $31, the ferry highlights day at $26, and the private east and west day at $42. Those are different packages, with different boats and different group sizes. Fitting the pair into a west-coast day

The shared listing puts Kelingking first, then Angel's Billabong and Pasih Uug. The shared east and west day lists Kelingking Beach for 30 minutes, then Angel's Billabong and Pasih Uug Beach for 20 minutes each, before the road to Diamond Beach. The ferry highlights day lists Angel's Billabong, Pasih Uug and Kelingking in that reverse order and then Crystal Bay for 1 hour.

That second listing is a good example of why you should read the stop list. It starts the island day at the arch and pool, not at the cliff. Neither order is better in itself. The point is to read the stop list, so you know what you are paying for, and that the time on the clock for each stop leaves room for the walk from the vehicle.

The private east and west day is the most transparent on the pace: five named stops at 20 minutes each, with a speedboat of about 50 minutes each way and lunch at a local restaurant. That is a lot packed into a day, and the listing itself warns of a considerable amount of walking and stairs. If you want a slower day, drop Atuh Beach rather than shorten the arch.

What else to see on the same stretch of coast

Kelingking Beach is the neighbor: about 3 kilometers southeast, in Bunga Mekar village, with its T-Rex cliff and its steep steps.1,16 We have a full page on it, with the safety notes. If you have time for only one of the two, compare the minutes each listing gives before you choose.

Tembeling Springs lies about 3 kilometers farther along the coast to the southeast of Kelingking, and Indonesia.Travel gives a 30-minute walk down through the forest or a ride from locals.8 None of the listings on this page include it, so it suits travelers with their own driver. Those who want water time instead of cliffs can look at the yacht day, which lists three snorkel stops.

On the east side of the island, the shared east and west day moves on to Diamond Beach for 1 hour. That is a long drive across the island, so a day that covers both coasts rarely leaves spare time. Decide early which side you care about most, and let the other side be the optional one. The decision helper below turns that into choices.
