Where the island sits and what sets it apart

The Nusa Penida island lies southeast of Bali across the strait, and Indonesia.Travel calls it a stunning island with dramatic cliffs and crystal-clear water, with many temples and sacred sites that still play a part in local life.7 It is the biggest of the three Nusa islands, which also include Nusa Lembongan and the smallest, Nusa Ceningan.1 The island belongs to Klungkung Regency, the same authority that sets its visitor levy.

That mix of cliffs and temples is why a day here feels different from a day in Bali's resorts. The same ministry names a handful of things to do: trekking to Teletubbies Hill for its wide green scenery, diving at Manta Point, a visit to the cave temple of Goa Giri Putri, and trips to Diamond Beach and Atuh Beach for ocean views.8 Most of those spread across the whole island, which is why planning matters.

For a first visit the island splits neatly into two halves, a west with cliffs, an arch and a hidden spring, and an east with a staircase beach and a less-visited shoreline. Between them runs the interior, where the roads are the slow part of any itinerary. The map above places the pieces so you can see the distances before you pick a base or a tour.

How many people come, and when it thins out

Numbers from the Klungkung tourism head show how fast visits grew: 312,872 visitors to Nusa Penida in 2022,12 and 205,969 in just January to May 2023.13 The monthly counts climbed from 25,682 in January to 58,900 in May,14 which is the shape the chart on this page draws. Those are the regency's own ticket counts.

The Benoa port authority counted 37,089 travelers heading to the Nusa islands in the Christmas week of 18 to 24 December 2025, against 35,709 the year before, on 818 fast boat crossings.15,16 A hotel association put the average in high season at 5,000 to 6,000 arrivals a day in October 2024.17 In holiday weeks, plan for a busy island rather than a quiet one.

The same association said low season usually starts in October and November, and that the Nusa islands' visitors are mostly from abroad, with Germans and Britons among the main groups.18 Indonesia.Travel recommends the April-to-October dry stretch, for more favorable weather and says to book fast boat tickets well ahead in the holidays to avoid selling out.6

The west and the east, one after the other

On the west coast, Kelingking Beach sits in Bunga Mekar village, and Broken Beach, or Pasih Uug, a cove with a natural archway and turquoise pond, lies about 3 kilometers to its northwest.19,21 About 3 kilometers along the coast southeast of Kelingking you reach Tembeling Springs, a 30-minute walk down through forest.22 Each of the first two has its own page on this site, with the safety notes that matter.

On the east, Indonesia.Travel describes Diamond Beach on the eastern tip of the island with a staircase carved into the limestone cliff and diamond-shaped rocks on the sand.23 The same ministry's Nusa islands guide suggests Suwehan Beach, on the eastern edge, for people who prefer a less-crowded shoreline.24 A viewpoint called Molenteng sits 4 minutes from Diamond Beach, open around the clock, at Rp10,000 a person according to detikBali.10

In the middle sits Teletubbies Hill, a green hilltop the ministry names for trekking.8 One plan is to take the east in the morning and the west in the afternoon, or the reverse, but never both in a hurry. detikBali's sample day starts with Diamond Beach from 9:00 and ends with Broken Beach at 14:30, which gives you a feel for the pace.9

  • If I would like a quiet beach

    Ask about Suwehan

    Indonesia.Travel suggests it for a less-crowded shoreline.24

  • If I am traveling in a holiday week

Moving around: roads, rentals and drivers

Indonesia.Travel says the main way to get around is to rent a motorbike or car, with or without a driver, and warns that the hilly trails are challenging, some parts still rocky.3 detikBali quotes scooter rental from Rp60,000 to Rp100,000 per day.34 Those are the newspaper's figures from December 2025 and they move, so treat them as an indication.34 Inexperienced riders should think twice on hills like these.

Distances in minutes matter more than in kilometers. detikBali puts Diamond Beach 48 minutes by road from Sampalan harbor, and Broken Beach 30 minutes from Kelingking.28,11 Add photo stops and you see why a long trip across the island eats the afternoon. Each leg on a map looks short; a guide who knows the order of the roads saves more time than any shortcut.

The simple alternative is a Private car and driver. One listing offers private car hire with a driver for 6 to 8 hours, with extra time charged at IDR 100,000 an hour in cash, from $27. That fits a group that wants its own order of stops. If you would rather not plan at all, the shared and private day tours below fold the boat, the car and the stops into one booking.

What the island costs, fee by fee

Start with the island levy. In April 2022 the regent said it is Rp25,000 per adult and Rp15,000 per child, paid once and valid for the whole stay, covering the destinations the regency manages.4,5,35 It is sold at four posts: Sampalan harbor, Buyuk harbor, Banjar Nyuh harbor and Devil's Tear.29 Keep the ticket, since it stays valid for the whole stay.

Some sites sit on private land and ask for their own price. In September 2023 detikTravel reported that Diamond Beach's landowner was raising its fee from Rp25,000 to Rp35,000 from 1 October 2023, which a regency councillor called an illegal levy.36 Indonesia.Travel lists IDR 25,000 for Diamond Beach,33 and detikBali's December 2025 guide shows Rp25,000 plus Rp5,000 parking.28 Ask what you are paying for.

The province adds its own charge for visitors from abroad: Rp150,000 per person, paid once, only by cashless means, either online with Love Bali ahead of the trip or at its counters in the airport and the harbors.37 A fast boat ticket is quoted at Rp80,000 to Rp200,000 one way.38 On the booking side, listings start at $31 for a shared east and west day and $73 for the premium yacht day. Rupiah amounts are the sources' figures, not converted.

Island day checklist

Pack before the boat4

  • Sun protection and a hat for open cliff tops
  • A refillable water bottle for the long drives
  • Cash in small rupiah notes for fees and parking
  • A thin layer for wind on the boat

Sort the payment ahead of departure day4

  • Book the boat early in holiday weeks
  • Keep the island levy ticket with your documents
  • Decide if you drive, ride or hire a driver
  • Travel insurance that covers boats and cliffs

Choosing a day: shared, private or by car

Among the things to do in Nusa Penida, a shared east and west day is the budget route: one listing starts the pickup between 05:15 and 06:00 depending on area, takes the 7 AM boat from Bali, and lists 8 to 10 hours. A private east and west day gives you a fixed group and a speedboat of about 50 minutes each way. The premium day is the one with snorkeling and lunch, sold per traveler for 8 hours.

Think about what you want most. If photographs of the headlands and the east-coast stairs are the goal, the east and west days fit. If your group wants water time, the yacht day trades some land time for it. If your priority is flexible order and an unhurried lunch, car hire with a driver gives you control, though you then arrange the crossing yourself.

Whichever you choose, book early in the holidays, since boats can sell out,6 and tell the operator about anyone with limited mobility: the private listing warns of a considerable amount of walking and stairs. Keep the first day simple. You can always add a second day for the parts of the island that a single sweep cannot cover.
