Every way across is a boat, so the real choice is which harbor, which ticket and how much of the day the crossing eats. Here are the crossings side by side, with the times and from prices their listings state.

Facts on one screen
The ferry to Nusa Penida is in practice a fast boat, and the Indonesian tourism ministry names three departure points for it: Sanur, Kusamba and Padang Bai.2 A news report on island access adds the administrative picture, with Sanur in Denpasar, Kusamba in Klungkung and Padang Bai in Karangasem.4 For a visitor staying in the south of Bali, which means the Kuta, Seminyak, Canggu and Sanur belt, Sanur is the natural starting point, and Bali's provincial tourism portal describes the Port of Sanur as the gateway for crossings to Nusa Penida and Lembongan.3
Counting the crowd shows where the traffic actually goes. During 18 to 24 December 2025 the Benoa port authority recorded 37,089 travelers heading for the Nusa Penida islands on 818 fast boat crossings.5,6 Of those, 30,053 left from Sanur, 5,673 from Serangan and 707 from Tanjung Benoa, so one harbor carried the bulk of the week.7 Kusamba and Padang Bai are not among the three points in that count.
Serangan, the small harbor south of Sanur, matters for this site because the boat day we point to sails from there. Its listing begins at a lounge in Serangan and ends with the return to Serangan Harbor around 5:30 to 6 PM. That is a different arrangement from buying a seat on a scheduled boat, since the crossing, the snorkeling and the land tour are all bundled into one listing.
Five ways across
| Option | Boat leaves from | Crossing | What the listing states |
|---|---|---|---|
| One-way ticket | Sanur | 30 to 45 min1 | From $7, non-refundable |
| Sanur transfer | Sanur | 30 to 60 min | From $9, free cancellation |
| One-way or return | Sanur | Per listing | From $12 |
| East and West tour | Bali by ferry | 1 hour each way | From $31, 8 to 10 hours |
| Yacht boat day | Serangan | About 30 min | From $73, 8 hours |
All prices are from prices as the listings state them; a ticket is per traveler and tours differ in what they bundle.
Plan on 30 to 45 minutes of open water in a fast boat, with the arrival point depending on the weather.10 The ministry gives the same range for the whole journey from Bali.1 Listings are less tidy: one Sanur transfer says the crossing is 30 to 45 minutes in its highlights and then states 45 to 60 minutes depending on weather and the queue in its notes. Treat the longer figure as your planning number and the shorter one as a good day.
The boarding is not a dry gangway. A one-way ticket listing tells you to wear shorts because boarding means walking through knee-deep seawater, and it wants you checked in 30 minutes or more before departure, holding your voucher and a passport or valid ID. A second Sanur transfer advises arriving 45 to 60 minutes ahead. Pack a dry layer in a bag you can lift above the waterline, and carry anything you cannot afford to wet.
The strait can be rough, particularly on windy afternoons, and a listing recommends motion sickness medication for those days. Another says times may change with sea or weather conditions. If you are prone to seasickness, take the earliest boat you can, and treat an afternoon return as the part of the day most likely to be bumpy.
Boats from Sanur arrive at Banjar Nyuh Harbor, which the provincial portal calls busy because it is one of the island's entrances.12 Other arrival points are Toyapakeh and Sampalan.10 The ministry lists the whole landing zone as the place to hire onward transport, whether a motorbike or a car.11 If your plan involves a particular beach, ask which harbor your boat docks at before you buy, because the drive from the quay differs.
Two fees apply to a foreign visitor on a typical day. The Bali provincial levy is Rp150,000 per person and is paid only once during a trip to Bali.13,14 The island visit ticket is separate: in April 2022 the Klungkung regent put it at Rp25,000 per adult and Rp15,000 per child, paid once and valid for the whole stay on the island.8,15 One Sanur transfer listing states the same IDR 25,000 per person, to be paid in cash on Nusa Penida. Keep some rupiah notes for it.
The island ticket can be bought at four posts: Sampalan harbor, Buyuk harbor, Banjar Nyuh harbor and Devil's Tear.9 The tourism head said in July 2023 that the adult ticket covers all sites run by the regency, with no further payment at those sites.16 Privately run sites can still charge their own entry, as detikBali reported for a Diamond Beach landowner in September 2023.17 Fees are set by the authorities and move over time; read each amount here as the latest one reported, tied to its source, not as a quote.

Three ways to cross

Ticket only
Sanur, one way

Ferry tour
Ferry and car, 8 to 10 hours

Boat day
Serangan, 8 hours
Three kinds of listing cover the crossing, and they differ in how much of the day they take care of. The Sanur to Nusa Penida fast boat price starts low: a one-way boat ticket lists from $7, whose timetable leaves Sanur at 07:30, 09:00 and 15:00 and leaves the island at 07:30, 12:30 and 16:30. A one-way or return ticket from another seller lists from $12 with the same timetable. Those are tickets for people who will organise everything else on the island themselves.
A shared island tour folds the boat into the price. The East and West highlights day lists from $31 and spends 1 hour on the ferry each way, with the ferry leaving at 7 AM and pickups running from 05:15 to 06:00 depending on your area. Another full-day highlights tour uses a public fast boat that leaves Bali at 8 AM, with a 45-minute ferry each way. You give up control of your timetable and gain a driver, the island road knowledge and the stops.
The yacht day this site books is the third pattern. It lists from $73 for 8 hours, with a boat crossing of about 30 minutes, three snorkel spots, a beach club lunch and a guided car tour to Kelingking Cliff. It costs more than a ticket or a ferry tour because it sells the water as part of the day. Whether that suits you depends on how much you want to be on the sea rather than just across it.

The ministry's own advice is blunt: on arrival the main option is to rent a motorbike or a car, with or without a driver.11 It also warns that the island's trails are hilly and in places rocky, so the vehicle should be in good condition.11 A news report prices scooter rental on the island from Rp60,000 to Rp100,000 a day.32 That is a reported figure, not a quote, and it says nothing about insurance or fuel.
If you would rather not ride yourself, a private Private car and driver on Nusa Penida lists from $27 for 6 to 8 hours, takes up to 5 passengers and costs IDR 100,000 for each extra hour, paid in cash. The same listing does not include entrance tickets, activities or the boat from Bali, and the day starts on the island itself. Another private charter says it also starts from Nusa Penida and puts the boat from Bali at up to an hour.
The ministry names Kelingking as a place where the descent is steep and dangerous, which matters when you choose between an unhurried scooter day and a guided stop.33 Narrow, bumpy roads recur in the tour listings too. If your party includes small children or anyone who dislikes mountain roads, a driver is worth pricing. If you are confident on two wheels and fit, a scooter gives the freedom a fixed itinerary lacks.

The journey from Bali to Nusa Penida typically takes 30 to 45 minutes by fast boat.
Before you board
Boats fill up. The ministry advises booking fast boat tickets well in advance, especially in the holiday season, to avoid selling out.34 The December week mentioned above saw 37,089 travelers against 35,709 in the same week of 2024.5 In October 2024 the Klungkung hotel association gave an average of 5,000 to 6,000 visitors arriving per day in high season, and said low season usually starts in October to November.35,36
Weather decides the comfort of the crossing more than the calendar. The ministry suggests the April-to-October dry stretch, for more favorable weather on the island.37 Our weather page lays out the rain figures month by month, so use it if your dates are flexible. Whatever the month, a crossing that is delayed or switched to a safer alternative is part of boat travel, and the tour listings say as much in their own words.
Mind the return. The one-way ticket listings show the last listed Nusa Penida departure at 16:30. A tour that starts and ends on the island warns that no fast boats run back to Bali in the evening. A guided boat day that brings you back to Serangan around 5:30 to 6 PM is built around a boat of its own, so its timing does not rest on a public schedule. If you are on a ticket only, finish your last stop early and be at the quay with a margin.

The yacht day on this site lasts 8 hours, and the East and West tour runs 8 to 10 hours.
The ticket listings show a last Nusa Penida departure at 16:30, and a tour that ends on the island says no evening fast boats run back.
