Why people come to the east coast

On the eastern tip of Nusa Penida, Indonesia.Travel says, Diamond Beach has a staircase carved into the limestone cliff that leads to a stretch of sand dotted with diamond-shaped rocks, and the view from the top is just as spectacular as the shore itself.1,5 That second half matters. If a stop gives you only a short window, the railing at the top of the Diamond Beach stairs already pays for the trip.

The same ministry names Diamond Beach and Atuh Beach together when it lists the island's things to do, saying both offer stunning ocean views.6 That pairing is why some day tours list them as a set, with Diamond Beach as the stairs-and-sand stop and Atuh as a second walk on the same coast. Diamond Beach itself is listed in Pejukutan, in Klungkung Regency.2

Compared with Kelingking, which is a cliff-top spectacle with a dangerous descent, the east coast asks for more of your legs and less of your nerves. You walk down a built staircase, you reach the sand and you climb back. The fee, the stairs and the heat decide how enjoyable that is, which is what the rest of this page covers.

The stairs down to Diamond Beach

Listings that include the Nusa Penida Diamond Beach are candid about the stairs. The all-inclusive day says Kelingking is viewpoint-only while Diamond Beach is reachable via steep stairs if you are up for it, and the private east and west day warns that the tour involves a considerable amount of walking and stairs and advises against it for guests with limited mobility. Read those as honest guidance.

A practical way to handle a staircase is to treat the descent as only half the trip. You will climb out in the hottest part of the day if you arrive late, so a morning start is easier on your legs. detikBali's sample day puts Diamond Beach first, from 9:00 to 9:30, before the rest of the island.7 That ordering is a hint, not a rule, but it fits the logic of cooler hours for stairs.

Do not rush the steps and do not wear flat sandals. The sand at the bottom is soft, and a quick look back up the cliff tells you how much climb is waiting. If anyone in your group struggles, pick a spot on the stairs with a view and let them enjoy it there. The top view needs no apology.

Minutes on the east coast

  • Diamond (full day)60 min

  • Diamond (shared)60 min
  • Diamond (small)60 min
  • Diamond (private)20 min
  • Atuh (private)20 min

Minutes per stop as each listing names them; the shared and small-group days name Diamond Beach only.

Atuh Beach, the second stop on the same coast

Indonesia.Travel puts Atuh Beach in Nusa Penida beside Diamond Beach in its list of ocean-view trips,6 and the all-inclusive day lists them as two stops of 1 hour each, both involving a walk. The private east and west day gives each 20 minutes. The difference is large: an hour is a swim and a rest, twenty minutes is a look and a photograph.

Our sources describe Diamond Beach in more detail than Atuh, and we will not invent what they do not say. What you can plan for is the time: ask your operator how long the group stays at Atuh, and whether the walk is included in that time. A short stop is fine for a photograph, but if you want to put your feet in the water you need the longer slot.

For a quieter shoreline the ministry's Nusa islands guide suggests Suwehan Beach on the eastern edge for people who prefer a less-crowded beach.9 None of the listings on this page include it, which is exactly why some travelers like it. Ask a driver whether the road is passable before you plan a detour, because the east coast roads are not all equal.

What it costs to get in, and why the number varies

Indonesia.Travel lists Diamond Beach in Pejukutan with an entrance ticket of IDR 25,000.2 detikBali's December 2025 itinerary gives the same Rp25,000 per person and adds Rp5,000 for parking.4 These are two independent mentions of the same price,2,4 which is why we treat Rp25,000 as the reference. Prices are written here exactly as quoted, with no conversion.

The number has not always been stable. In September 2023 detikTravel reported that the private landowner who controls access was raising adult entry from Rp25,000 to Rp35,000 from 1 October 2023, and that a regency councillor called it an illegal levy because the island ticket is meant to cover destinations.3 That report is a snapshot, not today's price. Ask at the gate what you are paying for before you hand over cash.

Separate from beach entry is the island levy: in 2022 the regent set it at Rp25,000 per adult and Rp15,000 per child, valid for the whole stay.23,24 And foreign visitors to Bali owe the provincial levy of Rp150,000 per person, once.25 If you book a tour, ask whether entry is included. If it is not, carry small rupiah notes.

How far it is, and how tours fit it in

From Sampalan harbor, detikBali puts the drive to Diamond Beach at 48 minutes by road.4 Fast boats cross from Bali in 30 to 45 minutes,13 so a day from the south coast is long before you reach the stairs. The shared east and west day lists hotel pickups from 05:15 to 06:00 depending on area, and the 7 AM boat from Bali, with 1 hour at Diamond Beach.

The small-group east highlights listing, limited to 5 participants, builds the day around the east: a viewpoint over offshore islets, Diamond Beach and Teletubbies Hill at 1 hour each, with an optional tree house at IDR 75,000 per person. It costs from $165, a premium for a small group. The all-inclusive day starts at $39 and adds a 1.5-hour tree house stop to the beach time. If you want the tree house, check whether its own fee is separate.

If the east is your priority and you can afford one long day, pick a listing that names the stops and minutes, not one that says only highlights. The chart lays out how much beach time each listing gives. Set it beside the long drive on narrow, bumpy roads, which the shared listing itself warns about, and decide whether you would rather spend the day on the road or on the sand. A longer beach slot is worth paying for only if you will use it.

Before you start down4

  • Ask how long the group stays at the beach
  • Agree a meeting point and a time
  • Keep valuables out of the water
  • Leave time for the climb out

What else sits nearby on the east side

A viewpoint called Molenteng is 4 minutes from Diamond Beach by road, open around the clock, and detikBali lists Rp10,000 per person for it, with a tree house on the site.8 Together with the offshore-islets viewpoint on the small-group listing, it makes the east coast a viewpoint trip as much as a beach one.

Teletubbies Hill, the green hilltop Indonesia.Travel names for trekking, appears on the same small-group listing as a 1-hour stop.6 It rounds off a day that otherwise runs on stairs and sand. If you come in a holiday week, remember that the port authority counted 37,089 travelers in the Christmas week of 2025, and plan an early start.26

The map above shows how close the east-coast stops are to one another, with the west-coast cliffs a long drive away across the island. The practical effect is simple: pick either a west-and-east day and accept shorter stops, or an east-only day and stay longer. The listings and the chart below show both patterns, and the decision helper turns them into a choice.
