An island tour of Nusa Penida usually means one of two halves, and each half has its own cliffs, its own drives and its own crowds. This page sets the routes against each other so you can pick the one that fits your day.

Facts on one screen
Most Nusa Penida tours split the island into two halves, and the west is where the best-known photographs come from. Bali's provincial tourism portal calls Kelingking Beach a must on the West route and says it is always crowded, especially in the holiday season.1 The beach lies on the southwestern coast, in Bunga Mekar village, and Broken Beach is a cove with a natural archway about 3 kilometers northwest of it.5,6 The same portal places Broken Beach in the western tourism area, in the same area as Angel's Billabong.2
The east is a separate trip. Diamond Beach sits on the eastern tip of Nusa Penida and can be reached by car or scooter from the harbor.3 It is known for a staircase carved into the limestone cliff that leads to sand dotted with diamond-shaped rocks.7 Atuh Beach, a hidden beach flanked by two high cliffs, lies on the southeastern side.4,8 On the same side, the Indonesia.Travel site suggests Suwehan Beach on the eastern edge for people who prefer a less-crowded beach.9
Two clear names are worth fixing in your head. The listings call Broken Beach by its local name, Pasih Uug, and the Love Bali portal says the same: local people call it pasih uug, which means Broken Beach.2 Angel's Billabong is the nearby tidal pool, and it shares a stop with Broken Beach on most west day tours. If a listing offers only one of the two, check which.

Three listings show the range of west tours. A snorkeling and West land tour lists from $17, rated 4.68 from 5,062 reviews, and combines three snorkel spots of 40 minutes each with Kelingking Beach for 50 minutes, then 40 minutes each at Pasih Uug and Angel's Billabong. The land tour is a separate option from the snorkeling-only choice, and, depending on the option you pick, the listing's length ranges from 2 to 9 hours.
A second tour swaps the snorkel stops for Manta Point and Gamat Bay at 1.5 hours each, then visits Kelingking, Pasih Uug and Angel's Billabong at 45 minutes each, on the land tour option only. It lists from $26 and is rated 4.64 from 1,502 reviews. A third, a full-day highlights tour, adds Crystal Bay for 1 hour to Angel's Billabong and Pasih Uug at 25 minutes each and Kelingking Beach for 45 minutes, and lists from $26.
The west is compact. A news report puts Broken Beach about 30 minutes from Kelingking, which is why a single guide can stack three stops into one morning.10 Cars can drive directly to the Kelingking viewpoint, per the provincial portal.11 The walk down is another matter: the ministry calls access to the beach quite challenging, with a steep and dangerous descent.12 A west day is mostly viewpoints; going down to the sand is your own call.
Where the minutes go
The listing's own durations: the 85-minute drive is the stretch from the west stops to Diamond Beach.
East tours are less common but have a very different feel. The East Highlights day with a tree house stop lists from $165, is limited to 5 participants and lasts 8 hours with pickup included. Its stops are a viewpoint, Diamond Beach and Teletubbies Hill at 1 hour each, with transfers of about 1 hour at each end. The tree house viewpoint costs an extra IDR 75,000 per person and is optional.
A beach highlights tour lists from $29, with a driver who speaks English and Indonesian, 8 to 10 hours, and highlights of the Kelingking viewpoint, Diamond Beach and Atuh Beach. The same listing says the fast boat travels at 23 to 25 knots and may rock over waves. It is rated 4.65 from 179 reviews, a smaller crowd than the largest shared days.
On the ground, the numbers are small but they add up. detikBali puts Diamond Beach 48 minutes from Sampalan harbor, with entry at Rp25,000 per person and parking at Rp5,000.13 The Molenteng hill viewpoint is 4 minutes further, open around the clock, at Rp10,000 per person.14 A private landowner was reported in September 2023 to be raising Diamond Beach entry from Rp25,000 to Rp35,000, which a regency councillor called illegal, so ask what the gate charges today.15
Three routes to book

West
West coast, with snorkeling

East
Diamond Beach, 5 guests at most

Both
Both halves, ferry included
Two sides in a day is possible and a very long one. The shared East and West day lists from $31 and is rated 4.71 from 7,780 reviews, with a live guide in English, Indonesian, French, Chinese, Japanese or German. The route is Kelingking for 30 minutes, Angel's Billabong and Pasih Uug for 20 minutes each, an 85-minute drive, then Diamond Beach for 1 hour. Atuh Beach is among the highlights the listing names.
The time budget is where it gets tight. Pickups run from 05:15 to 06:00 depending on your area, the ferry leaves at 7 AM and takes 1 hour each way, and shared transfers last about 12 hours against about 10 for meeting-point options. Vehicles carry a maximum of 5 passengers. Nothing in that outline leaves long for a swim or a descent, so choose the day if photographs from the top are the goal.
A private version exists. The private East and West highlights day adds Atuh Beach to a list that includes Kelingking, Pasih Uug, Angel's Billabong and Diamond Beach, at 20 minutes each, with lunch at a local restaurant. It lists from $42 and carries the warning that the tour involves a considerable amount of walking and stairs. If your party is large or has varied fitness, ask which stops can be dropped.

The terrain is the same on both sides of the island: hilly, rocky in places and challenging for a vehicle.16 Wear sturdy footwear for beaches that require hiking, the ministry says, and names Kelingking among them.17 The way from the cliff top to the shore is described by the rescue agency as hundreds of wooden steps, needing extra effort in light rain.18 That sentence matters more than any packing list.
The cliff is not a place for shortcuts. A visitor died on 12 September 2026 after reportedly leaving the route to find a path to the cliff edge and slipping into a ravine near Kelingking Beach.19 In January 2026 the rescue agency said it was hard to carry an injured visitor up the Kelingking steps, which it put at roughly 170 meters of height.20 Stay on the marked route and keep your ambitions for the viewpoint.
For timing, the ministry suggests the April-to-October dry stretch, for more favorable weather on Nusa Penida.21 A tour listing adds that Nusa Penida roads are narrow and bumpy, and that sea conditions may be choppy on the boat. If you plan an east day for Diamond Beach, check the tide and the light with your guide, as the staircase is your reason for going.

Kelingking Beach is a mandatory tour destination in Nusa Penida with tour routes to the West route, it is always crowded, especially when the holiday season arrives.
For either side
Pick the west if Kelingking is the picture you came for and your time is short. The snorkeling-plus-West land tour is the budget start at $17, and the full-day highlights tour at $26 adds Crystal Bay. Expect crowds at Kelingking, which the provincial portal describes as always busy.1 Go early or late, and keep one hour in hand.
Pick the east if the stairs, the sea stacks and a quieter day matter more. The East Highlights day at $165 is the high-priced, small-group answer, and the beach highlights tour at $29 adds Atuh. The east asks for more driving between stops, and the detikBali time of 48 minutes from the harbor to Diamond Beach is a useful baseline.13
Pick both only if your trip has a single day for Nusa Penida. The shared East and West day lists from $31, and the yacht boat day that this site books sails and snorkels first, then tours Kelingking by car for 120 minutes. It trades the east for the water. If you have two days on the island, give each side its own day and the stops stop feeling like a queue.
